Sport in New Zealand

New Zealanders are mad about Sport. If we are not cheering along our most famous All Blacks team, then we are yelling support for the Black Sticks (NZ Women’s hockey team), screaming for the Black Sox (New Zealand men’s softball team) or cheering on our national cricket or netball sides. Any time of year, when visiting for a New Zealand conference, there is a sports game to watch.

But it’s not only the heroes we champion, New Zealanders from every walk of life and of every age compete in sports competitions on a weekly basis – Saturday netball, kids’ soccer, cycling, rowing, tennis, athletics, synchronized swimming, squash, water polo, horse riding… the list goes on!

Individual sports have gained a lot of momentum in recent years with international performances from the likes of Cameron Brown and others bringing New Zealand tri-athletes and Ironmen to the world stage. At home in New Zealand, kiwis of all shapes and sizes are taking up the challenge to complete their first, second and third multi-event competition. Train up at home before you leave and enter one of these exciting events following your conference.

With so many sports made popular in this country, there are hundreds of events to get involved in or attend as spectators. Check with your local visitor information centre or search the internet under the sport of your choice to find out if you can attend or compete in an event during your stay in New Zealand. You may want to check www.ironman.co.nz or www.triathlon.co.nz. This could be a fantastic end to your time in New Zealand, or a great start to a busy conference.
